The movie starring Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson “Marley&Me,” which opened in United States theaters on Christmas Day, has managed to top the U.S. box office chart for the second week in a row, which rendered its overall earnings to exceed the $100 million threshold.
Within the second week-end since it was released, the production about a naughty dog that teaches the newlyweds played by the two aforementioned actors some valuable life lessons brought in $24.1 million from domestic ticket sales, according to box office tracker Media by Numbers.
Following „Marley&Me” in terms of box-office revenue was Adam Sandler’s latest comedy „Bedtime Stories,” which made $20.3 million from Friday to Sunday (with a total of $85 million since it debuted), while „The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” starring Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett, came in third.
The latter movie, which has received five Golden Globe nominations, made $18.4 million during its second week-end throughout cinemas in North America, for a total of $79 million.
Coming in fourth and fifth were Tom Cruise’s Nazi thriller „Valkyrie” and Jim Carrey’s „Yes Man” comedy, respectively. The former brought in $14 million withing the week-end and $60.7 million since it opened on Christmas, while the latter earned $13.9 million, for a total of $79.4 million.
Media by Numbers revealed that United States and Canada earnings amounted to $9.63 billion in 2008, not much behind 2007’s record takings that totaled $9.68 billion.
The big winner, “Marley&Me,” was directed by David Frankel with a script written by Scott Frank and Don Roos.
