Marion “Suge” Knight, co-founder of Death Row Records, has been having trouble lately in both his professional life and his personal relationships with some of his – now former – friends.
Once a famous and successful agent for stars, Knight has currently filed for bankruptcy, which is another sign that the financial crisis doesn’t spare any business. Before filing for bankruptcy on October 30th, Knight also had a rough summer, as his company’s assets were sold at an auction.
Among other things, Knight had blamed Kanye West for losing an earring, with both an emotional significance and a high price, as the ring was a 15-carat diamond stud earring. The ring disappeared three years ago, and Knight stated that the earring was stolen. Also, Knight has filed a lawsuit against Kanye West, but for an entirely different reason. At Kanye’s West pre-VMA party in 2005, Knight was shot in the leg, and it’s still unknown who the perpetrator was. Knight is now blaming Kanye for allowing a party attendee to bring a gun at the party, smuggling it past security.
According to the suit, such an event was not entirely unpredictable, as violent encounters between East Coast and West Coast rappers are no novelty. Also, it seems that some of the guests attending Kanye West’s party, mostly hip-hop artists, were on bad terms with Knight.
Upon being shot, Knight had his bone shattered by the bullet and he needed to undergo surgery and months of physical recuperation therapy. It also affected his mental well-being and his business, costing him a considerable part of his profit. The earring he lost was worth $135,000, and he says it was retrieved by an employee who assured him that the ring will be restored to him. As that has not happened yet, Knight believes the man worked for Kanye West.
