French actress Marion Cotillard will join Johnny Depp and Christian Bale in the Michael Mann-directed crime drama “Public Enemies.”
Marion Academy, nominated for an Academy Award for best actress for her portrayal of Edith Piaf in “La Vie en Rose,” will play Billie Frechette in the Universal Pictures Depression-era crime drama “Public Enemies,” trade paper Variety reports.
Cotillard’s character is the lover of notorious gangster John Dillinger, portrayed by Johnny Depp. Christian Bale was previously announced to co-star as Melvin Purvis, the FBI agent that remains in history as the man who put an end to Dillinger’s illegal ways – and to his life.
Channing Tatum, Giovanni Ribisi, Stephen Dorff and Jason Clarke are also joining the cast, according to Variety. Tatum will play outlaw Pretty Boy Floyd and Ribisi will play Alvin Karpis. Dorff is in negotiations to play Homer Van Meter, while Clarke will play John “Red” Hamilton.
These four characters were part of a Dillinger gang that robbed banks across the Midwest during the Depression.
Filming is set to begin March 10 in Chicago, on a script by Ronan Bennett, Ann Biderman and Mann. Mann will produce with Kevin Misher. Jane Rosenthal is exec producer.
Variety also reports that the project is now coming to fruition after years of planning from Mann, Misher and Universal because of the Hollywood writers’ strike that led to the cancellation of several films.
Depp had been set to film “Shantaram” at this time of year, only Warner Bros. postponed it because the script was not ready. Cotillard herself was attached to play in the Weinstein Co. musical “Nine,” directed by Rob Marshall, but this too was postponed. She is still expected to take part in that project, alongside Javier Bardem, Penelope Cruz and Sophia Loren.
The trade paper goes on to note that Tatum had been attached to appear in the Oliver Stone-directed “Pinkville,” for United Artists, while Ribisi has been shooting the James Cameron-directed “Avatar.” Clarke most recently wrapped the Jada Pinkett Smith-directed “The Human Contract.”
