A New Orleans Mardi Gras parade turned into a chaotic scene on Fat Tuesday when several gunshots injured seven people, including a toddler. Two suspects have been taken into police custody, authorities announced.
The violent shootings took place in the vicinity of Garden District at approximately 1:40 p.m., just minutes after Rex, the final major parade of the celebration, had concluded.
Police spokesman Bob Young told the Washington Post that the victims, which included three men, ages 50, 33 and 20, two women, ages 20 and 17, and a 15-year-old boy, had been taken to hospitals. As for the 20-month-old toddler, Bob Young explained that he had been scratched by a bullet and had not been severely injured.
The two most seriously wounded victims were shot in the stomach and underwent surgery, according to Officer Janssen Valencia. However, he did not offer further information on the health conditions of the men. The other victims were said to be in stable condition on Tuesday night.
Janssen Valencia said that police believed the victims had been mere passerbys who were shot at the dictates of chance.
Two persons, 19-year-old Mark Brooks and 18-year old Louis Lazone, both of New Orleans, were arrested on seven counts of attempted first-degree murder.
