The California Board of Parole denied Susan Atkins’ request for Compassionate Release Consideration. The Charles Manson follower, who killed actress Sharon Tate almost 40 years ago, is dying of brain cancer, has had her left leg amputated and is paralyzed on her right side, the Associated Press reported citing the inmate’s husband James Whitehouse.
Atkins is now 60 and has been in detention longer than any other female inmate in California history. She was sentenced to jail along with Manson, Patricia Krenwinkel and Leslie Van Houten for stabbing Roman Polanski’s pregnant wife and six other persons to death on Aug. 9, 1969.
Initially, Atkins and the other killers had been convicted to death, but their sentences were commuted to life when the U.S. Supreme Court temporarily ended the death penalty.
Atkins, who has about six months left to live, has asked the court to let her spend the last days of her life among friends and family and not prison guards. However, the California Board of Parole Hearings rejected her request Tuesday with a unanimous decision. Atkins lawyer said he filed a separate motion in Los Angeles County Superior Court seeking his client's release.
“She is a cold-blooded woman who to this day has not
displayed any remorse,” wrote Sharon Tate’s sister Debra Tate, according to The
Associated Press.
The Los Angeles County D.A. argued against Atkins’ release and said that the woman who was the leading character in one of the most horrific chapters in California history "has failed to demonstrate genuine remorse and lacks insight and understanding of the gravity of her crimes."
