0Rockstar is making again headlines due to its controversial
titles. BBFC (British Board of Film Classification) the British equivalent of
ESRB, rejected Rockstar’s Manhunt 2, which means the game won’t be sold in UK.
David Cooke, director of the BBFC, offered a detailed explanation
about the reasons behind board’s decision.
"Where possible we try to consider cuts or, in the case
of games, modifications which remove the material which contravenes the Board’s
published Guidelines. In the case of Manhunt 2 this has not been
possible," he said.
"There is sustained and cumulative casual sadism in the
way in which these killings are committed, and encouraged, in the game," Cooke
added continued.
The previous game in the franchise, Manhunt, released in
2003 was classified in UK as 18+, but even in this case censors ruled it was at
the limit of acceptability in that category.
Manhunt 2 is the first game to be banned in UK in the last
ten years. The last which didn’t get BBFC approval was Carmaggedon 2.
Rockstar may appeal the decision and the company already
issued a response to BBFC’s statement.
"We are disappointed with the recent decision by the
British Board of Film Classification to refuse classification of Manhunt 2.
While we respect the authority of the classification board and will abide by
the rules, we emphatically disagree with this particular decision.” Rockstar
said.
Manhunt 2 is a psychological horror game that depicts the
players character as an inmate that is forced to kill other characters to
escape from a nightmarish asylum. The games was set to be released for PS2 and
Wii platforms.
”We believe all products should be rated to allow the public to make informed choices about the media and art they wish to consume. The stories in modern video games are as diverse as the stories in books, film and television. The adult consumers who would play this game fully understand that it is fictional interactive entertainment and nothing more.", Rockstar added.
