Steve Kreuscher, a Chicago citizen, filed a petition to legally change his name. Nothing surprising so far, but he didn’t do it because his name is a bit hard to pronounce, he wants to change his name into "In God We Trust," The Associated Press reported.
Kreuscher, a school bus driver in the northern Chicago suburb of Zion, said he wants to be known by the name of "In God We Trust" to thank God for helping him through some tough times.
"I've had to trust God through incredibly hard times," he said for the Daily Herald.com.
The man’s first name would be "In God" and his last name "We Trust."
"Those words are an endangered species," Kreuscher added.
"You might take it off the money, but you can't take away my name."
In an interview with the (Arlington Heights) Daily Herald, the 57-year-old man said that he is worried atheists may remove the phrase "In God We Trust" from U.S. currency.
Kreuscher mentioned the expression "God Reigns" which was removed from the Zion city seal in 1992. The courts ruled that the phrase was unconstitutional. The Zion was founded as a theocracy by a religious group that believed the Earth was flat.
The man asked a judge to allow him to change his name in Lake County Circuit Court.
