It was just another tranquil, usual day at the Notre Dame Elementary in Portsmouth in southern Ohio, but Thursday turned out to be very different from a usual day. The elementary school from a small community in southern Ohio near the Kentucky border was shocked to see a furious man enter the building and gun down a female teacher – his wife.
Fortunately, the teacher identified as Christy Layne was the only victim of the shooting and no children were wounded, the police report showed.
The condition of the woman is still unknown. The only thing the police said about her is that she was immediately taken to the Southern Ohio Medical Center. She was shot and possibly stabber, police said.
The police are currently in the process of searching the shooter, who left the building immediately after he shot her wife and thus escaping police. He was identified as Michael Layne and according to some media sources he is now barricaded in his home on Argonne Road.
Eyewitnesses said shots were fired in the home and SWAT arrived at the scene. The latest reports showed that smoke was coming out of Layne’s home. It might be the smoke used by police to force him out of the house.
The terrible incident forced school officials to close another Catholic school nearby, said Deacon Tom Berg, vice chancellor of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Columbus.
"We are mobilizing our crisis team and sending them down," he said.
The Public schools were also closed, said Superintendent Jan Broughton, the man responsible with the community public schools.
Police said a person was stabbed on 11th Street earlier in the day and investigators believe the incidents are connected. Apparently, the victim of the stabbing was Christy Layne’s mother.
Police said a media conference was scheduled for noon today.
The Notre Dame Elementary will remain under lock on Friday as well, said Terry Duncan, emergency services director for the Red Cross. He added that counselors from Shawnee Mental Health Center will be available for the children who need them until 6 p.m. today and Friday and Monday from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the community center located in the vicinity of the school.
