A New York man was sentenced to four years behind bars for starving his mother to death.
The 61-year-old thought he was doing the right thing for his sick mother but it all ended with a "horrible death" by starvation for his 89-year-old mother.

The NYC man identified as David Auchmoody received his sentence today after a ruling from a judge in Utica. Auchmoody’ mother, Edith Auchmoody died of starvation in February 2007, according to court documents.

The New York man was initially charged with manslaughter, but in March he pleaded guilty to criminally negligent homicide in a plea agreement with prosecutors.

When asked by prosecutors why he acted in such a manner, Auchmoody said he just followed his mother's wishes to be left alone.

The results of the autopsy showed that Edith Auchmoody was about 50 lbs. before "rotting to death". She was suffering from bed sores and a bone infection which eventually killed her.
Investigators said the old woman died on a pile of soiled air mattresses and the room’s ceiling was piled with garbage at the home they shared in Whitestown.

Auchmoody washed and dressed his mother after she had died and then reported her death to the funeral home. He said he did it because he was "embarrassed" about the way she had lived.

According to state law, the man supposed to intervene when he realized his mother was in such a bad condition that she wasn’t unable to call somebody for help, Assistant District Attorney Kurt Hameline said.
