According to Las Vegas
police, a man who stayed in the hotel room where toxin ricin was found on
Thursday was hospitalized since Feb. 14 in critical condition.
Man’s identity was not disclosed by authorities as they were
still investigating the case of ricin found in a room at an Extended Stay America
hotel one mile west of the Las Vegas Strip.
The man had been in the room where the ricin was found for
an unknown period of time, according to Deputy Chief Kathleen Suey.
Suey said that the vials of white powder were brought to the
manager by a man, thought to be a relative or a friend of the sick man.
The man was hospitalized on Feb. 14 with respiratory
distress but nobody knew that he was exposed to ricin so the health district
and police were not notified.
Due to the ricin found in the room the motel was evacuated
and seven people along with three officers were taken to hospitals for treatment.
Deputy Chief Suey said that they were released as they presented
no signs of exposure.
On Friday the hotel was reopened after all the ricin was
removed by the health officials.
Deputy Chief Suey said that the patient wasn’t questioned
and he was probably unconscious.
According to F.B.I. national spokesman Richard Kolko, the
incident had no connection top terrorism “based on the information gathered so
far.”
Captain Joseph Lombardo, head of the Homeland Security unit
for Las Vegas police, said: “Ricin
has no medical uses other than cancer research. An individual citizen, other
than being involved in cancer research or cancer prevention, would not have any
legal means or proper means of having that,” the New York Times reports.
Suey said that tests made by police homeland security
officers, the Nevada National Guard and a laboratory in Las Vegas were positive
for ricin.
Ricin is obtained from castor beans that are processed.
Castor beans were found by police officers in the room and
powder in a small vial. Almost 500 micrograms of ricin can be deadly for an
adult.
Ricin is not illegal to be owned, but it is illegal to
processed it and use it in order to poison someone.
