A Dutchess County jury convicted the second of two men
accused of killing a family of five and setting their house on fire last year on
30 of 31 murder charges on Saturday.
The jury convicted Charles Gilleo Jr., 33, who killed Manuel
"Tony" Morey, Tina Morey and their three sons on Jan. 19, 2007.
According to prosecutors, Gilleo and Mark Serrano, 30, went
to the Morey home on Route 82 in Fishkill in order to steal cash and cocaine
from the couple. Serrano was convicted in December for the killings.
In an attempt to cover the crimes the house and the family’s
car were set on fire.
According to the autopsy results, the two adults were shot
while the boys- 13-year-old Manuel; Adam, 10; and Ryan, 6 — were stabbed.
After 40 hours of deliberation the jury convicted Gilleo and
the sentence is due later this month.
The two were charged with 42 counts of murder, arson,
burglary, conspiracy and perjury. Twenty of those charges are of first-degree
murder and 11 are of second-degree murder.
Gilleo was acquitted of one second-degree murder charge.
Gilleo’s case related more on the testimony from Serrano, 50
other witnesses and over 200 pieces of evidence. On the other hand Serrano was
linked through forensic clues to the murders and was convicted of 41 charges in
December.
According to District Attorney Edward McLoughlin, Morey
didn’t let Gilleo buy drugs on credit and that upset the latter. He used
Serrano to help him with the crimes.
Gilleo's attorney, Jeffrey Hoerter, said that he wasn’t
satisfied with the verdict and that an appeal will be filed.
Gilleo's sentencing was settled by County Court Judge Thomas
J. Dolan on March 13.
Senior Assistant District Attorney Edward McLoughlin, who
prosecuted both defendants, said: "With a crime like this, with this many
deaths, and the manner of those deaths, I can't imagine anything other than the
maximum," USA Today reports.
Both men face five consecutive life sentences.
