“Mamma Mia!” What An Album! Soundtrack No. 1 on U.S. Chart

Although it took five weeks to get on top, the “Mamma Mia!” movie soundtrack moved up two spots on the Billboard album chart and reached No. 1 on the U.S. chart on Wednesday.

The Decca Records released soundtrack sold 131,000 copies in the week ended August 10, according to Nielsen SoundScan, and became the second soundtrack this year to get to the peak, following the January “Juno” soundtrack.

“Mamma Mia!” is the film adaptation of the Broadway musical founded on ABBA’s most famous hits and has earned $104 million at the North American box office. The soundtrack features Meryl Streep, Amanda Seyfried and Pierce Brosnan, among others, performing the well-known band’s classics. Contrastingly, the Swedish pop group has never had a top 10 album on the Billboard 200, its highest position being No. 14, with 1978’s “The Album.”

Teen idol Miley Cyrus’ “Breakout” lingered on the second spot for a second week in a row, selling 102,000 copies, while last week’s No. 1, Sugarland’s “Love on the Inside,” slipped to the third spot with only 91,000 units. Following the sweet duo, Kid Rock’s “Rock N Roll Jesus” stayed on No. 4 for a third consecutive week, selling 90,000 copies.

At No. 5 was Lil Wayne with “Tha Carter III” and 67,000 copies, while Coldplay rose one spot to number six, selling 55,000 copies of “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends.”

Ex Tricky Pony vocalist Heidi Newfield debuted at No. 10 selling 34,000 copies of “What Am I Waiting For,” as country singer Keith Anderson’s new entry “C’mon!” landed directly on the twelfth spot.
