Major Toy Recall Is Major Scare for Parents

Mattel Inc’s recent recall of some 1.5 million toys made in China, due to contamination with lead paint has got parents across the nation worrying about their children’s health.

The recent incident concerning toy-manufacturer Mattel Inc, producer of such all-time favorites among children as Barbie dolls and Matchbox cars, has sparked a heated debate over the safety of children’s playthings.

Earlier this month, Mattel announced it would recall 1.5 million products worth approximately $30 million, as there were worries that the toys were covered with potentially dangerous lead paint.

At the time, Mattel stated that the toys were manufactured by a Chinese contractor for its Fisher Price unit. The company added that it would contact its Chinese contractors and review the producing system, in order to avoid future mishaps.

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention brought a different perspective to the situation, informing the public that toys are not the most significant source of lead exposure among children. Instead, lead paint and lead-contaminated dust in old buildings represent the greatest danger.

US health officials said hundreds of thousands of youngsters suffer from lead poisoning, but not from toys. Officials nevertheless recommend that parents remove any toys that may be contaminated with lead. If they are worried that their children may already have been exposed, they should consult a doctor.

The risks are not small. Exposure to lead may cause learning disabilities. Furthermore, lead poisoning only happens over a longer period of time. Among its symptoms are headaches, irritability, nausea and insomnia. Some may even go into comas.

State and federal officials say there are no safe levels of childhood exposure to lead.

Mattel’s problems did not end with the recall of its lead-tainted toys. The California-based company announced Tuesday that it would recall another 18 million toys, once more manufactured in China, because they contain small magnets that pose a health threat to children, as they can be removed and swallowed.
