The singer and Hollywod actress Jennifer Lopez is likely to
adapt her 2002 romantic comedy “Maid in Manhattan”
for television. She is currently negotiating with ABC for the whole series of
one hour episodes.
The original story of the film was written by John Hughes
and was called “The Chambermaid.” Since 1991 when he gave up filmmaking, he’s
been writing scripts under the pseudonym Edmond Dantes.
“Maid in Manhattan”
also featured Ralph Fiennes, a rising politician who stays in the posh hotel
Lopez works in as a maid. Her character’s name was Marisa Ventura and she was
in fact a single mother struggling to make a better life.
The TV series won’t be so different from the basic story.
Lopez will still play a young Latina from the Bronx, but her relationships will change and have
independent ups and downs.
“The show is a different maid in a different Manhattan," said
Chad Hodge to the Hollywood Reporter. Hodge ("Runaway," "True
Calling") will write the script for the pilot.” The ABC series will be
produced by Lopez, Joe Roth and the film's producer, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas.
Hodge also said that Lopez is very much helping him by
investing a lot in the show: "a fountain of ideas," he said.
"She will be very integral in the pilot and series," Hodge said.
This is not the first time ABS has tried to make a TV show
after the movie, but the first attempt failed to impress. The 2004 - 20005
pilot season was not picked up.
