When Madonna hits the road for a new tour, everybody is eager to see her on stage. Thus, Madonna claimed her queen entitlement once again on account of ticket sales of more than $105 million her “Sticky and Sweet” tour registered.
In spite of the fact that Billboard recently announced that this year’s biggest grossing tour belonged to Bon Jovi, concert-tracking magazine Pollstar said on Monday that the Material Girl was the major gig attraction in North America this year.
However, the discrepancy can be explained by taking into account the fact that Billboard considers worldwide results from November 14, 2007, to November 11, 2008, while Pollstar looks at box-office results in North America only throughout the 2008 calendar year.
Pollstar’s ranking of this year’s highest grossing tours saw Celine Dion on the second position, as the Canadian-born artist earned $94 million from her first tour since bringing her elongated stay at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas to a standstill and coming back to the gig route with her “Taking Chances” tour.
The Eagles came in third with earnings of $73.4 million, barely surpassing Kenny Chesney’s $72.2 million tour receipts and Bon Jovi’s $70.4 million gross.
Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band were No. 6 with $69.3 million for their “Magic” tour.
Neil Diamond ($59.8 million), Rascal Flatts ($55.8 million), The Police ($48 million) and Tina Turner ($47.7 million) rounded out Pollstar’s Top 10 list.
