Madonna Starts Tour with Controversy, Links McCain to Hitler

Madonna launched her "Sweet and Sticky" tour in her own fashion - by creating a bit of controversy and pissing off some people. On Saturday, the tour’s first show was held in Cardiff, Wales, and it began by showing a set of political montages during the song “Get stupid.”

So far, so good, but the political figures featured in the montage included not only “classics” such as Adolf Hitler, John Lennon, Gandhi and Al Gore (the montage was referring to issues such as destruction and global warming). After Hitler, Madonna fans could see in close succession the image of presidential candidate John McCain, while Barack Obama appeared a bit later.

As expected, the people in charge of McCain’s presidential campaign were very irritated by the montage and the subliminal message it sent. McCain’s people described the comparisons made in the montage as “outrageous, unacceptable and crudely divisive all at the same time.”

Just as other celebrities such as Robert de Niro, George Clooney, Matt Damon, Stevie Wonder and Oprah Winfrey, Madonna has been showing her support for Democratic presidential Barack Obama. But the Republicans accused her of refusing to consider any attack on McCain as being off-limits.

The montage was even labeled as "an insult to all Americans, Democrats as well as Republicans” by the founder of the Simon Wiesenthal Center.
