Madonna’s concert at the Dodger Stadium in Los Angeles last night featured two very
special guests, who nevertheless were never on the same stage together: former Mouseketeers
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake.
Pop superstar Madonna was among the celebrities that
expressed support for pop princess Britney Spears during her more difficult
times of not so long ago. It should come as no surprise then that the
50-year-old singer invited the younger one on stage Thursday night to rock on “Human
Nature.”
Madonna played guitar as well and the two performed staying
close together and frequently placing one arm around the other’s shoulder.
Wearing a demure tuxedo- style
shirt, pants and black heels, Spears introduced herself with a take
from her last album: "It's Britney Bitch."
She then sang along with Madonna on the last verse of the track
Human Nature, to the delight of the crowd, which included Jennifer
Lopez, Ryan Seacrest, Heidi Klum, Drew Barrymore, Fergie and Donald
Sutherland.
Madonna courteously kissed Britney’s hand when they had finished their song. Kissing
comes comfortably to the two, as we can all recall their cheeky tongue-action
during the opening performance of the 2003 MTV Music Awards.
Critics said it was her best performance yet in her bid to come back
from the effects of her traumatic marriage break-up last year.
The performance was part of Madonna’s Sticky and Sweet tour,
in support of her latest album “Hard Candy.” The night also featured another young
pop icon, from the same generation as Britney (and as it happens, former
boyfriend) Justin Timberlake, who joined Madonna on stage for their duet “4
Minutes.” The two also did some of their fancy dancing, as in the video.
While some concertgoers had speculated they would see
Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake on the same stage, perhaps even singing
and dancing together, this never happened. It isn’t even clear whether the two
faced each other at all.
It is clear though that not even lighting problems and
technical difficulties could stop Madonna from giving fans her best, on a
half-completed set as it was.
Madonna closed the show with a multi-colored image of president-
elect Barack Obama on her huge video backdrop. "We have something to
celebrate," she said. "I don't know about you, but I'm the happiest
girl."
