Madonna and Guy Ritchie are rejecting recent reports with
regard to their divorce settlement. They issued a joint statement just a couple
of days after Liz Rosenberg, a representative for the singer, informed The Associated
Press via e-mail that Madonna would pay the British filmmaker at least 50
million pounds ($76 million) as part of an agreement.
The former couple explains in the release that the
information offered by the pop icon’s spokeswoman is both “misleading and
inaccurate,” particularly with respect to the figures stipulated in the
settlement. The two say that they have tried to keep details regarding their
divorce away from the public eye, since everybody seemed to be interested in
the affair.
Madonna and her ex-husband added that the “financial details
of the settlement will remain private” and that they were content with the
conditions of the agreement.
However, their focus during these rough times is the
happiness and comfort of their children.
Madonna and Guy Ritchie have two children together,
8-year-old Rocco and 3-year-old David Banda, who was adopted from Malawi
in 2006. Moreover, the 50-year-old pop star has a 12-year-old daughter, Lourdes, from a previous
relationship with personal trainer Carlos Leon.
The statement released by Liz Rosenberg claimed that the
settlement Madonna and Guy Ritchie had reached was between 50 million and 60
million pounds ($76 million and $92 million). She said that the figures
included the value of the couple’s country home, Ashcombe House in western England, and that the house would remain in the
possession of the movie director, as well as their west London pub, the Punchbowl.
The two reportedly have an estimated $525 million fortune,
but the majority belongs to the pop star, while Guy Ritchie’s wealth is
estimated at about $35 million.
Madonna and the 40-year-old British film director tied the
knot during a luxurious ceremony in December 2000 at Skibo Castle
in the Scottish Highlands. The couple made their breakup public a couple of
months ago, after almost eight years of marriage and months of speculation.
They were granted a preliminary divorce decree last month
and their separation is expected to become final and official in January.
During the past months, Madonna has been linked to Yankees
star Alex Rodriguez and, in spite of the fact that they deny all allegations,
various reports claim a romantic relationship between the two. A-Rod’s wife,
Cynthia Scurtis, filed for divorce this summer, citing “emotional abandonment”
and marital infidelity by her husband.
Alex Rodriguez and Cynthia wed in 2002 and have two
children, 4-year-old Natasha Alexander, and 7-month-old Ella Alexander.
