Madeleine’s Parents Return to England

Kate and Gerry McCann, the parents of missing Madeleine, were expected to return home on Sunday after being questioned by the Portuguese police and declared formal suspects in the toddler’s disappearance.

British media said the couple have changed their mind and decided to fly back to England after previously announcing they will remain in Portugal to clear their names. It seems their other two children are the motive standing behind this latest decision.

Policemen escorted the McCanns to Faro airport early Sunday, anchoring their statement that Portuguese authorities gave them permission to leave the country despite their “arguidos” status.

Both Kate and Gerry were named suspects Friday and had to face another inquiry at the police headquarters in Portimao, southern Portugal. Since the investigators included them in the circle of suspects, the couple complained they are being set up by the police, who is trying to wrap up the case as soon as possible.

Madeleine vanished from a hotel room in Praia da Luz on May 3 while her parents were having dinner in a nearby restaurant with some friends. After following numerous leads, investigators made a sudden turn in their search and decided to put the spotlight on the McCann couple earlier this week.

Based on forensic test results, the Portuguese police called in Gerry and Kate for another round of questioning. After thorough analyses, detectives found traces of blood in Madeleine’s bedroom and a car rented by her parents several weeks after her disappearance.

Test results reportedly showed the blood belonged to the little girl and an avalanche of speculations quickly appeared in both British and Portuguese newspapers.

Because both Kate and Gerry are doctors, the media speculated Madeleine had received a fatal dose of sedatives. Those rumors were anchored by investigators who reportedly asked the couple if they are responsible for the “accidental killing” of their daughter.

Kate McCann was the first to face questioning on Thursday for almost 11 hours, media reports saying she refused to answer some questions and turned down a plea bargain offered in exchange for a confession.

While opinions are divided, members of the McCann family and close friends said the couple is not responsible for the death of their own daughter and accused the Portuguese police of trying to “distract from their own inefficiency.”

The McCann’s could be charged in the following week if prosecutors gather enough evidence, the couple fearing they will be arrested. Until now, no travel restrictions have been imposed for Kate and Gerry McCann.

The parents launched an attack against the Portuguese police, who “do not want to have a murder in Portugal” and try to end the investigation swiftly.

Kate McCann lashed out at the investigators for pressuring her during the interviews “to confess that she killed her daughter by accident.”

“Police want me to lie - I'm being framed,” the 39-year-old mother told the Sunday Mirror.

“Police don't want a murder in Portugal and all the publicity about them not having pedophile laws here, so they're blaming us,” she added.

She was completed by her husband, Gerry, who said Madeleine’s disappearance is their “worst nightmare but now it just keeps getting worse and worse.”

He said it’s very hard and sometimes “incredibly frightening” for them to work their way through “a system that you don't know and don't really trust.”
