Tyler Perry’s “Madea Goes to Jail” grossed approximately $16.5 million in ticket sales and claimed the top spot at the box office for the second weekend in a row, thus outshining “Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience.”
The teenage heartthrobs’ movie, featuring the band both on stage and backstage, earned $12.7 million and registered the second-biggest debut for a concert film, behind only last year’s “Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert.” The 3-D production, keeping track of fellow Disney star Miley Cyrus, opened at the top of the charts after being shown in only 683 theaters. The Jonas Brothers movie, however, debuted in 1,271 venues.
“’Hannah Montana’ set a bar so high it’s going to take forever to knock it off,” said Chuck Viane, president of distribution for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, as quoted by The Associated Press.
Spirited and aggressive granny Madea remained relentless at the box office and followed the successful track of the previous films focusing on Tyler Perry’s big-mouthed persona. “Diary of Mad Black Woman,” which opened in 2005, and 2006’s “Madea’s Family Reunion” also debuted at No. 1 and took in a total of approximately $150 million.
Following the eight-Oscars success last week, “Slumdog Millionaire” came in third with $12.1 million, taking its total to $115 million and registering the highest post-Academy Awards weekend for a best picture Oscar winner in a decade.
The weekend’s other wide release, “Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li,” adapted from the popular video game and distributed by 20th Century Fox, debuted at No. 8 with $4.6 million.
