“Mad Men” creator and executive producer Matthew Weiner finalized negotiations for a new deal with Lionsgate, the company that produces the show, which puts him at the helm of the Emmy and Golden Globe-winning series for its third season returning next summer, Variety reported.
After wrapping the series’ second season in October last year, Weiner’s negotiations with Lionsgate became highly public when the showrunner let it be known that his contract on the show had run out. AMC handed Lionsgate a third-season pickup for the series with Weiner's future on it still uncertain.
Weiner, who wrote and nurtured the show for seven years before it was greenlit, was seeking substantial increases in the show’s production budget as well as his salary. Although specific terms of the seven-figure deal were not released, the contract also requires Weiner to develop additional projects, including a feature film (not based on “Mad Men”) for the company.
Calling “Mad Men” “a charmed experience” for him, Weiner praised AMC and Lionsgate as being “two companies who love taking risks and value creativity.”
"I am proud to work so closely with these two companies who love taking risks and value creativity, and I am thrilled to get back to work with the most talented cast and crew in the business," he said. AMC reportedly stepped in to help finance the seven-figure pact with Weiner.
“It's a happy day,” said Lionsgate TV president Kevin Beggs to Variety. “We're glad to have Matt back in the family. We look forward to next season and many more to come.”
