Former TV star Mackenzie Phillips, who has long battled drug
addiction, has entered rehab again after she was charged with felony
possession of drugs. The actress was allegedly found carrying narcotics at Los
Angeles International Airport.
Phillips, 48, has been charged with two felony counts of
possession of a controlled substance, heroin and cocaine, after she attempted
to smuggle small bags of the two substances past security screeners on August
27. Police said she had a "small amount" of drugs packaged in
balloons and plastic bags.
She also faces a misdemeanor count of unauthorized
possession of a hypodermic needle or syringe.
Following her arrest, Phillips spent a night behind bars
before being released on $20,000 bail. She is scheduled to be arraigned in
October.
Her attorney confirmed that she has entered an unknown
rehabilitation facility in an effort to get clean.
Phillips, who is the daughter of John Phillips, founder of
The Mamas and the Papas pop group, appeared in George Lucas’ film “American
Graffiti” when she was a teenager. She also starred in the popular sitcom “One
Day At A Time,” with Valerie Bertinelli. She got fired from the sitcom twice in
1982 for drug-related reasons. Phillips has claimed to have been exposed to
drugs as a child by her father and she has been into rehab several times in the
past three decades.
The actress’ last role was in the Disney channel series “So
Weird,” where she played a rock star mom.
