After pleading guilty to one count of felony drug charge in
a Los Angeles court on Friday,
Mackenzie Phillips was sentenced to an 18-month drug diversion program.
The 48-year-old actress, best known for her rebellious role
in the ‘70s CBS sitcom “One Day at a Time,” agreed to enter rehab after an
August arrest at the Los Angeles International airport, when security guards
discovered she was carrying heroin and cocaine during a routine inspection.
Mackenzie Phillips was officially charged with two felonies,
for possession of heroin and cocaine, as well as a misdemeanor charge of
unauthorized possession of a hypodermic needle or syringe.
However, as part of a plea deal, prosecutors dropped the
heroin and syringe possession counts and, in addition, if the daughter of The
Mamas and the Papas lead singer, John Phillips, successfully completes the drug
deferment program, the case will reportedly be written off.
Mackenzie Phillips told Judge Keith L. Scwartz on Friday
that she was grateful for the fact that law enforcement saved her life, while
the judge told the former “American Graffiti” star that she was “making
tremendous progress.”
The actress has been battling drug addiction for a very long
time now, as she admittedly smoked marijuana for the first time at only 13 and
shot up at 17. Her drug and alcohol issues also caused her double dismissal
from “One Day at a Time.”
