Mackenzie Phillips, the former teenage star of television
sitcom “One Day at a Time,” was arrested Wednesday, Aug. 27, at Los Angeles International Airport,
after she was found to be in possession of what appeared to be cocaine and
heroin, reports Reuters.
Mackenzie Phillips, daughter of The Mamas & the Papas
lead singer John Phillips, became a household name in the 1970s as she starred in
the long-running television show “One Day at a Time.”
It’s a blast from the past now as the 47-year-old actress
was arrested Wednesday morning at Los Angeles Airport, when she went through airport
security screening and officers found what appeared to be drugs packed in
balloons and plastic bags in her baggage.
“Following a secondary screening, she was found to be in
possession of what appeared to be cocaine and heroin,” Sgt. Jim Holcomb of Los
Angeles Airport Police said, as quoted by Reuters.
The officer added that the “small amount” of substance had
been inserted in balloons and plastic bags.
Mackenzie Phillips was escorted to the airport police
station and later taken to the Los Angeles Police Department jail in Van Nuys, California.
Bail was set at $10,000.
This is not the first time the actress has been linked to
substance use and/or abuse. Her time on “One Day at a Time” was marred by her
battle with drug addiction. This ultimately led to her being fired from the
show.
Phillips starred in the sitcom from 1975 to 1980, when she
was dismissed. She returned a year later but her troubles continued and she
left again before the final season was over.
The former teen star more recently revigorated her career by
co-starring in the Disney Channel series “So Weird” in 1999. She has also had
small roles in television roles such as “Seventh Heaven,” “Crossing Jordan” and
“Cold Case.”
