Come September 7, 2008, the MTV Video Music Awards will be broadcast live
from Paramount Pictures Studios in Los Angeles, after
experimenting last year with Las Vegas,
MTV announced Monday.
The return to Los
Angeles, after a 10-year break, also marks the show’s
25th edition. The non-conventional ceremony has mostly been held in New York, with short visits to Miami
in 2004 and 2005 and Las Vegas
in 2007.
This year’s participating celebrities – host, nominees, presenters
and performers – are to be unveiled in the coming weeks, MTV said. The show’s
producers are also infusing this year’s festivities with some brand new
freshness.
Fans are more than welcome to executive-produce the show, deciding
who the nominees are and bringing the music they love to the forefront. While the
show has a tradition of being untraditional, in September awards will be handed
out in an even more original manner: from soundstages, rooftops and city
streets.
Last year’s ceremony at the Palms Casino Resort’s luxury
suites received huge amounts of attention as then-troubled Britney Spears was
announced as the night’s first performer. Her rendition of “Gimme More,” the
first single off her new album, was anticipated as a great comeback – only to
lead to intense discussions concerning her musical career, her less-than-perfect
body and her general state of mind.
Other controversial episodes included an off-camera fight between
Pamela Anderson’s ex-husbands Kid Rock and Tommy Lee, as well as Kanye West’s
blunt remarks regarding his unsuccessful night – the rapper lost in all five
categories where he had been nominated.
R&B star Rihanna, who was omnipresent throughout 2007 with
her hit single “Umbrella,” featuring Jay-Z, won video of the year and monster
single of the year, while Justin Timberlake won four awards, including top male
artist.
Among last year’s performers were the Foo Fighters, Kanye
West, Common, Maroon 5, Fall Out Boy and Rihanna.
