Britney Spears is among the nominees of the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards with her video for "Piece of Me," it was announced on Friday.
The 26-year-old pop singer, whose performance at the MTV Video Music Awards was a complete flop, was voted online this year for the Best Female Video category.
The recovering pop mess, who is facing tough competition from Katy Perry with "I Kissed a Girl," Rihanna's "Take a Bow" and Mariah Carey with "Touch My Body," was also rumored to be opening the event again this year, hopefully correcting her legendarily awful performance from last year.
According to a source quoted by the Mirror, "They are going to leave it up until the week before to decide. But they can only advise her - Brit will do her own thing."
Originally, it was said that MTV producers were open to the idea of Britney Spears performing, but new reports suggest they're actually worried she might want to perform.
"Everyone deserves a second or third chance, right?" said Van Toffler, president of MTV Networks Music Group. "I'm not sure how we top Britney opening the show. We are working on it every minute of every day."
However, considering her obvious progress in the last several months, since being under her father's conservatorship, a career comeback doesn’t seem far fetched at all.
The singer is currently working on a follow-up album to last year's critically-acclaimed "Blackout." In other Britney recovery news, she recently finalized a legal agreement with K-Fed, granting him sole custody of their two tots, with extended visitations for the pop mom.
The 25th annual awards will be hosted by British actor/comedian Russell Brand. The show will air live on Sept. 7 at 9 p.m. ET/PT from Paramount Studios in Hollywood.
