MTV Revamps Atom Films Comedy Web Site

AtomFilms, a humor website founded in 1998 by Mika Salmi in Seattle, was rebranded by its current owner MTV into Atom.com. Expectedly, its exclusive partner is MTV's Comedy Central. The partnership will also see a show, Atom TV, broadcast on the comedy channel at 2 a.m. on Monday nights.

The newly revamped Atom.com will launch with four original series, such as Border Patrol, Stevan & Stephen, Stickman Exodus and Benny, Escaped Convict. MTVN Entertainment Group said their new project is intended to become the leading network for original digital comedy.

The former AtomFilms.com had almost 2 million visitors each month, which were checking out a significant library of 20,000 videos. We'll probably see the new Atom.com rise past these numbers before the end of the year, if MTV manages to maintain the original fan base of the popular site.

However, many users complained about the old AtomFilms.com because it showed too much advertising before each of its videos.

The award-winning broadband entertainment network has managed to rise to success by offering advertising-supported original short subject films, animations, and series by independent creators. The original company, Atom Entertainment, formed in 2001 by the merger of Atom Corporation and Shockwave.com. Subsequently, MTV bought the combined company in 2006 in a deal worth around $200 million.

Its top shows included Angry Kid, developed by Darren Walsh at Aardman Animations.
