MTV Cancels Flagship Show "Total Request Live"

MTV heads announced their decision to rest “Total Request Live” after 10 years of broadcasting (a lot for MTV).

TRL executive producer Dave Sirulnick said the show will host a special edition on a November Saturday and then rest. Sirulnick insisted that the flagship US show won’t be gone for good. It’s just a temporary thing, "let's let it have a little bit of a rest for a minute," he said. Yeah right…

The show lost its freshness on the way - and what a long way it was - and freshness is what MTV is all about, aside music of course.

The show, which comes live from New York's Times Square, made its debut in 1998 as the Carson Daly-hosted “Total Request Live” and, since then, helped propel pop music young hopes. Among those who performed during the TRL in their first years there were also Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Justin Timberlake with N’Sync and the Backstreet Boys.

"We want to close this era of TRL in a celebratory way, and 10 is a great number," said Sirulnick.

Traditionally, TRL has been playing the top ten most requested videos of the day. It airs Monday through Thursday for one hour. Most episodes are pre-recorded, so the word “Live” in the title is actually not quite accurate.

One of the first singers who talked about the canceling of the show was rapper Eminem. The artist said he was going to miss TRL.

"Where else will I be able to start feuds, defend my honor vigorously and act like an angry teenager on national TV? Oh wait...the VMAs!" he said.
