M.I.A. Talks About Her ‘Amazing’ Newborn Baby

From the Grammy Awards to the delivery room, British songwriter and vocalist Maya Arulpragasam, aka M.I.A., appeared to be over the moon with the birth of her first child last Wednesday, a baby boy.

In a blog post on her MySpace page on Saturday, the R&B superstar, whose due date was on the same day she performed “Swagga Like Us” with Jay-Z, T.I., Lil Wayne and Kanye West at the Grammy Awards, recalled how she would’ve carried on partying if her early labor hadn’t kicked in Monday at 2 a.m., soon after her performance.

"MY BABY WAS BORN WEDNESDAY, HE IS HEALTHY, FINE, BEAUTIFUL AND THE MOST AMZING THING EVER ON THIS PLANET, OF COURSE IM HIS MUM!!!“ the 31-year-old singer wrote.

The baby's father is the London-born performer's fiancé, musician Benjamin Bronfman, the guitarist for The Exit. Although she declined to release her son's name, M.I.A. went on saying she is already making plans to spend all her time with the baby, postponing her tour dates for 2010, “making mix tapes” and “figuring out a way to break out of the hospital,” she jokingly wrote.

Asked on the Grammys red carpet last Sunday what she most eagerly anticipated about being a new mom, M.I.A. told People, “Everything. I think it's going to be the best thing in the world!”

She had two Grammy nominations this year, her track “Paper Planes” was nominated for record of the year, while “Swagga Like Us” was in contention for best rap song.

Next, the singer is scheduled to perform at the Oscars on Sunday, February 22, where she is nominated for her contribution to the “Slumdog Millionaire” soundtrack.

M.I.A. announced she was expecting last fall, but vowed to keep her baby's sex and due date a secret.
