Britney Spears’ mother is like most mothers around the world: she reproaches herself for her young daughter’s troubled personal life, telling Life & Style Weekly magazine, “I blame myself.”
Lynne Spears, 52, feels she is to blame for Britney’s continuous string of troubles over the past year because she couldn’t spend more time with the young singer while she was on tour as a teenager.
“I blame myself,” Lynne told Life & Style Weekly magazine in an exclusive interview. “What mother wouldn't? I wish I'd been there more while she was touring. But I couldn't be. I had the other kids to look after.”
Lynne is the mother of three children with former husband Jamie Spears. Britney is the middle child.
The 52-year-old is currently writing a memoir about raising her family in the public eye, described by publisher Thomas Nelson of Publishers Marketplace as her “personal story of raising high-profile children while coming from a low-profile Louisiana community.”
Of this Lynne does not sound happy, as she tells Life & Weekly: “I didn't raise my children to have Hollywood careers. This all just exploded in my face, and big dreams became big headaches.”
Her book, to be titled “Pop Culture Mom: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World,” is set for release on the next Mother’s Day, May 11, 2008, reports the Associated Press.
Lynne and Britney, 25, have experienced strains in their relationship. It was reported that this summer Britney handed a rather unpalatable letter to her mother. TMZ.com reported at the time that the letter asked Lynne to stay away from her two grandsons if she was taking any medications that would impair her ability to be around them.
Britney was apparently concerned that Lynne was taking certain medication that could impair her ability to take care of Sean Preston, 2, and Jayden James, 1. In an ironic twist, the pop singer temporarily lost custody of her sons several weeks ago to former husband Kevin Federline.
While there were rumors that, as Britney and Lynne became estranged, the elder Spears turned to Kevin, she stands by her daughter. “Britney loves her kids from the pit of her soul,” she said.
“Here are two parents who care about their kids,” she says. “They're good people. With my daughter's, Kevin's and the boys' interest at heart, I'm trying my best to bring them together, to bridge the gap. I think things are getting good.”
Mother and daughter reconciled in early October, after Brit Brit had lost custody of the boys.
