An announcement made by Acer, the world’s third-largest PC maker, might lead to a laptop operating system “revolution,” as the company is set on continuing to promote the Linux Operating System for its low cost laptop division.
Acer explained that it wants to continue its journey alongside Linux and build a real community around its low cost devices by continuing the development efforts and the research.
According to the company, Linux represents a very good alternative to other operating systems, especially due to its cheaper purchase. The lower cost is related to the smaller hardware requirements and the inexistent licence fee.
Acer’s belief has been further strengthened by the launch on Tuesday of its new Aspire One mini-notebook. The device retails at a maximum price of $499 and at this point, it is by far the most affordable product available for people in search of an inexpensive proper working mobile device. The convenient offer is very likely to force Microsoft increase their efforts on providing a better Windows OS sales strategy.
The offering and interest in mini PCs have been highly boosted by the new market releases of several companies such Everex, Fujitsu and Hewlett-Packard.
The market demand changes very quickly and apparently, the investment in the development of such devices is considered a rather risky business. According to some analysts, people would rather save up for an extra period of time in order to purchase a bigger and faster portable device. Luckily for the low cost manufacturers, the market seems to be opened for all new ideas and release
