Louisville Teen, 13, Dies after Heart Transplant

A Louisville teen who had recently received a new heart passed away Saturday, local media sources reported.

Marquis Popp, 13, was recovering for a transplant surgery he had undergone Tuesday at Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville.

The teen was diagnosed with a congenital heart problem at birth and has been under medical supervision for heart ailments all his life, his mother Judy Popp told local media sources. He liked to involve himself in every activity he could do. Sport was the only field where he was not allowed to take any step. He was feeling very good after a recent pacemaker implant. That’s why everyone was shocked Tuesday when Marquis collapsed at Charleston Middle School.

He was immediately taken at Kosair Children’s Hospital on Tuesday where he was listed on critical condition. He remained on life support and generally unconscious until Friday when a new heart became available from a child that died during that day.

About 238 people came on Friday at Charlestown Middle School and rolled their sleeves to donate blood for Marquis. Judy Popp said she was impressed by the way the community responded to the call of helping her son. Most of them did not know Marquis, but they felt right about giving him a chance to life.

Unfortunately, Marquis passed away Saturday at the hospital where he was recovering from the transplant surgery. There has been no word yet on any funeral arrangements.
