Richard Garriot, or “Lord British” as he is known in the gaming world, is the sixth person that paid in order to travel into outer space and he is the first to continue a “spaceflight” tradition that runs in the family, as his father Owen Garriot was an astronaut.
The famous game designer reached the Space Station and will orbit the Earth for 10 days, time which he will spend participating in different experiments. Garriot reached space along with astronauts Mike Fincke and Yuri Lonchakov, on a Soyuz TMA-13 spacecraft.
The team carried into outer space the digitalized DNA of some of the greatest minds of humanity in order to be kept on the orbiting space station and to be received by any intelligent life that could be out there. Some of the minds transferred on the drive in outer space are of Stephen Hawking, Matt Morgan and comedian Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, a show that focuses mostly on harsh political satire. The drive also holds humanity’s accomplishments and is intended to act as eternal proof of our existence.
Richard Garriot has proven that dreams are not to be taken lightly and that with a little ambition anything is possible. The game designer has dreamt since childhood of space travel but his poor eyesight disqualified him for the role of an astronaut.
Since then he didn’t give up and invested in Space Adventures, a company that has previously made space travel possible for other millionaires. Richard Garriot is now living his dream of seeing the cold outer space and by doing so he might have opened a road leading to commercial space flight.
