London: One Killed, 18 Hurt as Bus Hits Tree

A double decker bus travelling out of central London to North Greenwich smashed into a tree in Central London, killing one person and injuring another 18. According to BBC News, the person who was pronounced dead right at the scene was a woman and it appeared that she was just a pedestrian, not a passenger of the bus.

The accident took place on Tower Bridge Road, as the bus was travelling on the 188 route.

Authorities said that officers were interrogating the driver of the bus to determine the cause of the accident.

A spokesman for the London Ambulance Service said that 18 people were treated, including 4 who had suffered serious injuries and were transported to the hospital. They had back and head injuries.

The woman who died remains to be identified.

“She has yet to be identified and next of kin informed,” a Metropolitan Police spokesman said, reported BBC News.

A full investigation was started by the Transport for London. A spokeswoman for transport company National Express said that a crew was also sent at the scene to help the policemen with the investigation.

Some witnesses said that people were shocked and panicked. According to BBC, Charlie Fayinka, who worked in the vicinity, said the bus driver fainted after the crash.

Tower Bridge Road was closed and some bus routes have been diverted.
