Local TV Stations To Go Digital Despite DTV Switch Delay

The deadline for digital television transition was pushed back until June 12 but that won’t stop four local TV stations from sticking to the initial plan and make the switch next week.

Congress passed a law last week postponing the deadline until June 12 for broadcast stations to turn off analog signals and broadcast only digital ones. Previously, most stations were supposed to move to all-digital broadcasts Feb. 17.

However, the bill that passed last week makes the delay optional meaning TV stations are free to turn off their analog signal before the new shut-off date of June 12.

Currently all of San Diego's television stations are broadcasting in analog and digital but as of next week, San Diego's ABC, CBS, Fox and CW outlets will start broadcasting solely digital signal and for viewers who using an old-fashioned antenna, those stations won’t be there anymore.

“If you've got a digital set or cable or satellite, you won't even know this is happening,” said Jeffrey Block, general manager of KGTV/Channel 10, San Diego's ABC affiliate. “But if you have not received a digital TV converter or purchased a digital TV set, you will lose the ability to view us.”

Meanwhile, consumers who need converter boxes to receive the new signals could face holdups in getting them. And even once they have them, they may face setup issues.

For people who don’t have satellite television, cable or an HDTV with a built in HD receiver, a set-top box will be required to get the new digital signal.

In trying to help the transition go smoothly, the government set up a program that allows every household two $40 coupons that would drop the final converter box price to about $20 each but the coupons came with a 90-day time limit. New coupons can’t be issued until existing ones are used or expired. Through January, more than 14 million of the 47 million mailed coupons had expired, tying up millions of dollars in useless plastic rebates.
