Liza Minnelli Stars On Broadway In “Liza At The Palace”

Liza Minelli is one of America’s best known singers, doubling her notoriety by also having a career as an actress. She was born in 1946 and is the daughter of another famous actress and singer, namely Judy Garland, with her second husband, the film director Vincente Minelly. As acknowledgment of her talents, she received an Academy Award in 1972 for her performance in “Cabaret”, three Tony Awards, an Emmy Award, a Grammy Award and a Golden Globe.

She was born in Hollywood, California, in an already famous family of artists. From her mother’s side, she inherited the talent of 6 generations of successful entertainers. Although the two had a very close and open relationship, there were times on stage when they saw each other not as mother and daughter, but as Judy Garland and Liza Minnelli – on other words, “the competition.”

Liza Minelli was not an only child, she had two younger siblings. As the eldest child, she had to carry the weight of Judy Garland’s substance abuse on her shoulders. Some of her later-on famous childhood friends were Mia Farrow, Cheryl Crane, Candice Bergsen, Tisha Sterling, Natalie Cole and Katy Manning. She has been married and divorced four times. Her husbands were Peter Allen, Jack Haley Jr., Mark Gero and David Gest.

Palace Theatre has an early Christmas present this year, in the form of “Liza at the Palace”, Liza Minnelli’s latest show. According to the most recent reviews, Liza is “funny, surprisingly energetic” and puts on one of her best vocal performances ever seen. The show starts with a very sensual interpretation of “Teach Me Tonight”, followed by “My Own Best Friend.” Surrounding Liza are 12 top musicians, lead by the famous musical supervisor Billy Stritch on piano.
