Live From New York, Tina Fey Nails It Again On SNL

The “30 Rock” creator, writer and star well... rocks, in her square glasses and highlighted bangs with that silly-looking smile and spot-on Alaska accent. After the great success of her first appearance as GOP vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin, along with a visibly annoyed and frustrated Hillary Clinton, played by Amy Poehler on the Saturday Night Live season premiere, the Palin skits kept getting better and better.

Talk of the town is that Fey is so good as Palin, she might be more worthy of the vice-presidential chair, or even that Palin should consider impersonating the comedian for a living, just in case the Republicans don’t win the elections. But while the first skit was obviously fictional, the last two are more and more realistic, as large portions of the comedic scripts are actually taken directly from the Alaska governor interviews or speeches, a fact that kind of scares most of the electors.

Tina Fey, who was recently awarded by the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences with Emmys for lead actress in a comedy series, comedy writing and another one for the show she created, "30 Rock”, is obviously not a Palin fan. She impersonates her brilliantly, but says she wants to get it over with. “I want to be done playing this lady Nov. 5,” she said, making it clear that until then, the comedic bits featuring the Alaska Governor will be more ruthless, thus funnier than before.

Her latest is a comedic take on Thursday night's debate between Alaska Gov. Palin and Democratic candidate Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, along with SNL regular Jason Sudeikis as Biden and guest star Queen Latifah as debate moderator Gwen Ifill, of PBS.

The 11 minute sketch is evolving around another one of Palin’s unforgettable words of wisdom. No, not the one about how she has a lot of experience with foreign affairs, Alaska being so close to Russia and all. But a rather new bit about how she and John McCaine are a “team of Mavericks.”

Fey, impersonating the Republican vice presidential candidate takes it further by explaining how she would lead the country. When asked about the financial crisis, she answers:” You know, John McCain and I, we're a couple of mavericks. And gosh darnit, we're gonna take that maverick energy right to Washington and we're gonna use it to fix this financial crisis and everything else that's plaguin' this great country of ours."

When a puzzled Ifill, played by Queen Latifah, wants to know how “exactly” this “maverick energy” is going to solve “the plaguin’,” the answer comes as clearer as the one before, but this time with a delicate wink to the public: "You know we're gonna take every aspect of the crisis and look at it and then we're gonna ask ourselves, 'what would a maverick do in this situation?' And then, you know, we'll do that."(Wink)

The SNL gang will not stop at only putting a twist to everything Sarah Palin says, but they also emphasize the fact that, aside from managing to avoid every uncomfortable question, and talking about her love for Israel, she also uses her smile and delicate blinking and winking to get through to “those Joe Six-packs out there playing a drinking game at home.”
