Anna Nicole Smith’s daughter celebrated her first anniversary Saturday and it was as father Larry Birkhead promised: fit for a princess.

Photographer Larry Birkhead, the biological father of the baby girl former Playboy Playmate Anna Nicole Smith gave birth to last fall in Nassau, had been preparing for the birthday bash for some time.

He had even settled an exclusive deal with OK! Magazine in late August: the magazine would have exclusive coverage of Dannielynn’s party, in return for $1.7 million. The deal however fell through, in the midst of a scandal involving both Birkhead and Howard K. Stern.

Dannielynn’s party took place Saturday at socialite Tricia Barnstable Brown's home in Louisville, Ky. Hundreds of guests came to wish the little girl “Happy Birthday” and brought her gifts.

“It really was great to see her smile, especially through all the things that we've been through, just to get to that milestone of one year was just great,” Birkhead said.

No one however was allowed to take photographs. The guests had to leave their cell phones at the entrance and sign a release form promising not to take pictures, according to the Associated Press.

Anna Nicole gave birth to Dannielynn in Nassau hospital on Sept. 7, 2006. Her 20-year-old son Daniel died in that same hospital a few days later, while visiting his mom, apparently from a drug overdose.

Anna Nicole never quite recovered from the shock and grief of losing her son. In February 2007 she herself passed away. She was only 39.

Several men subsequently claimed they were Dannielynn’s father, requesting custody. Among them Birkhead, a former boyfriend, and Stern, Anna’s boyfriend during her last months and the man she listed as the father on Dannielynn’s birth certificate.

DNA tests proved Birkhead the father. He won custody over the little girl. Stern, who is a lawyer, was named executor of her estate.

Former MSNB journalist Rita Cosby has reportedly written a tell-all book titled “Blonde Ambition: The Untold Story behind Anna Nicole Smith's Death,” in which she claims the two men were actually involved in a “relationship.” Both have threatened to sue.

In a twist of events, Mark Hatten, another former boyfriend of Anna’s, has sued Stern. The lawsuit obtained by “Access Hollywood” claims Stern killed Anna Nicole and Daniel and accuses Stern of having tried to kill Hatten as well with “toxic blend of narcotics.”

Hatten is currently in jail, serving a sentence for making criminal threats against Anna Nicole and attacking her neighbor. His sister, Jackie Hatten, is allegedly a key witness in Rita Cosby’s book. She claims to have seen Stern and Birkhead in a compromising situation.

In announcing its decision to forego the exclusive deal with Birkhead on Dannielynn’s birthday, OK! Magazine’s publicist said the magazine had uncovered “explosive allegations regarding Larry Birkhead, Howard K. Stern and baby Dannielynn.”

“The newly obtained allegations are detailed, shocking and potentially incriminating. It makes it impossible for OK!, in good conscience, to promote this family's highly questionable relationship in our pages.”

Editor in chief Sarah Ivens stated in late August: “At the moment, my biggest fear is that Larry and Howard may have tricked us all.”
