'Lipstick Jungle' And ' My Own Worst Enemy' Canceled Amid Ratings Woes

Sadly for the fans of Brooke Shields and Christian Slater, their shows on NBC, "Lipstick Jungle" and "My Own Worst Enemy" respectively, were impossible to save from the low ratings, and the network decided to pull the plug on them.

Focusing on three, rich, fashionable career women who try to successfully manage their professional and love lives, "Lipstick Jungle," starring Brooke Shields, Kim Raver and Lindsay Price, survived its first season and beat out competitor "Cashmere Mafia," but struggled for viewers in its second season.

The numbers improved slightly the previous week, but the show's ratings have been low overall, especially after it was moved to the Friday night slot. NBC reportedly told producers they would not be ordering any new episodes, but it was unclear if the show will be pulled immediately. Five unaired episodes remain, but who knows whether anyone will get to see them.

The much-hyped Christian Slater-led drama, which debuted on October 13, about the double-life of an American secret agent, was scheduled to complete 13 episodes and wait for further instructions. The show truly had a lot of potential and was well reviewed by critics but people just did not seem interested in it. It also did not help that the show's lead-in, "Heroes," has been fading in the ratings as well. Writers are currently working on the ninth episode, which is expected to be the final one.

Both shows dropped to new ratings lows in recent weeks, with the Christian Slater action series sinking to a 1.8 among adults 18-49 (4.3 million viewers) on Monday and "Jungle" falling to a 1.2 (3.3 million viewers) on Friday. Although none  of the series were among TV's finest, they will be missed by their small steady fan base.  NBC refused to comment on Wednesday night, but industry insiders were already speculating about how the network will fill the 10 p.m. time slot that "Enemy" eventually will vacate.

Axing "My Own Worst Enemy" came as a surprise to some especially after NBC invested heavily in it, and promoted quite hard, but audiences did not respond in any meaningful way to the series.

None of the NBC's new shows averaged more than a 2.6 rating. The network had already extended full-season orders to "Knight Rider," which slipped to a series-low 1.6 last week, and "Kath & Kim," which has fallen in nearly every outing. Despite critical acclaim and an Emmy for best comedy, Tina Fey's "30 Rock" starring Alec Baldwin is averaging just 8.4 million viewers in its third season.

Long-running drama "Medium," which has worked well in the time slot before, is an obvious candidate. NBC had previously said "The Philanthropist" would fill the slot, but the network might slot its ambitious drama "Kings" into the hour.
