The iTunes Store has already enriched
its online movie catalogue with a fresh new contribution from Lionsgate, who brought
over 150 titles starting this month to the online store. Apple and Lionsgate announced
their partnership just one month ago, and decided to go even further than that.
Lionsgate announced that it is
working with Apple to bring Digital Copy for iTunes of specific DVDs and
Blu-Ray discs purchased. In other words, iPod and iPhone users will be able to
get their hands on the smaller version of the titles they’ve purchased.
The titles Lionsgate plans to
begin with are the latest “Rambo,” which will become available for purchase as
of March 27 and “The Eye,” starring Jessica Alba, due to be released on DVD
this summer. Other titles will of course join the first two later this year.
“Digital Copy for iTunes is a
perfect example of how packaged media and new digital technology can work hand
in hand for the benefit of our consumers,” said Steve Beeks, President and
co-Chief Operating officer of Lionsgate.
Consumers will be able to choose
from a wide variety of titles, but Lionsgate refused to name them for the time
being: “Lionsgate is constantly identifying fresh opportunities to monetize its
12,000-title filmed entertainment library in an increasingly digital world and
provide product that is at the very edge of consumer taste,” Beeks added.
And Apple seemed equally excited
on the perspective: “We’re excited that Lionsgate is delivering so many of
their great films on DVD and Blu-ray with an iTunes Digital Copy,” said Apple’s
Vice President Eddy Cue. “Now movie fans can easily transfer a copy of many
Lionsgate films onto iTunes and bring it with them on their iPod or iPhone.”
This is not the first collaboration
Apple has had in the field, as it also announced a deal with Twentieth Century
Fox earlier this year at Macworld, regarding the same matter: the production of
iTunes Digital Copies for purchased DVDs.
