Lincoln came out at the 2009 Detroit auto show with its new C concept car, a small four-door ultramodern vehicle that aims to attract to a wider younger segment of buyers.
Referring to the new release, Ford’s global design chief, J. Mays explained that "It's inevitable that a younger generation of buyers will want something different from a luxury brand," also adding that the C is expected to appeal to 30-something urban dwellers from city centers such as New York and Chicago. To end his statement, he said that the company’s officials are focused on turning the vehicle into a success in the United States, and only then will they consider taking it overseas.
The C was designed with the help of Freeman Thomas and Dave Woodhouse at the company’s Southern California styling studio, and the result is widely considered one of Lincoln’s strongest concepts.
It managed to bring together solutions for the need of fuel efficiency and also technical innovation, as it is powered by a 1.6 liter EcoBoost engine that delivers 180 horsepower and 180 pounds-feet of torque. According to the estimates, the car is expected to get a better fuel economy by more than 25 percent. It has a six-speed, twin-clutch "Powershift" transmission that uses more efficient dry clutches.
The new model was received with great enthusiasm by everyone at the event but for now there is no clear answer on whether it will go on production or not. If this will be decided upon, the C will become available in the United States in 2011 the soonest.
