Lil Wayne's Success and His Troubles with the Law

Lil Wayne’s recent success, of more than 1 million album copies sold in a week, could be shadowed by the rapper’s multiple problems with the law.

The singer became the first artist since 2005 to sell more than 1 million copies of an album in a single week, according to chart reports by Nielsen SoundScan. But he was also arrested at least four times in the last year…

According to reports, Lil Wayne is awaiting a DNA report which might put him in jail for at least three years and a half. The New York medical examiner’s office is currently analyzing the rapper’s genetic material, and if they find it matches traces recovered from a loaded .40-caliber semi-automatic pistol, Wayne will be in big trouble.

According to police reports, the gun was inside a Louis Vuitton bag that was carried by Lil Wayne when police officers boarded his tour bus on July 22, 2007.

Lil Wayne, whose real name is Dwayne Carter, initially refused giving a DNA sample, but he had to comply on May 13, after a judge in Manhattan Supreme Court gave an order urging him to accept.

According to New York Daily News, prosecutors expected the test’s results to be ready on June 2, but they still weren’t ready on June 10, when Lil Wayne’s album was released. So the rapper could fully enjoy his successful release. It remains to be seen for how long…

His album, “Tha Carter III,” debuted at No.1 on Billboard 200, with 423,000 copies sold in its first day of release. At the end of the first week since release, it had surpassed the record so far held by Mariah Carey, selling more than 1 million copies.

“Tha Carter III” was leaked online several weeks ago, but it seems the artist’s fans remained loyal and decided to buy the CD.
