Lil Wayne’s hit album “Tha Carter III” has been one of the most successful albums of 2008 and earned the artist Grammy Award nominations in eight categories. The list of nominations includes best album of the year and best rap album, two prizes which Lil Wayne probably can’t wait to get his hand on.
Massive hits such as "Lollipop" and "A Milli" helped “Tha Carter III” become the only record this year to sell 1 million copies in its first week.
Coldplay also had a phenomenal year. The British rock band scored seven nominations. Their album “Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends” earned them nominations for album of the year and record of the year.
On the third place of the most nominated bands or singers were Ne-Yo ("Year of the Gentleman"), Jay-Z ("American Gangster") and Kanye West which scored six nominations each. Meanwhile, Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ “Raising Sand,” earned them five nominations, including album of the year.
"When I was putting it together, I was trying to do something that everybody could get into, as opposed to just my pop and R&B core group," Ne-Yo said after the ceremony. "I was trying to do something that the world could enjoy and I think that the Grammy people paid attention to that."
For the Grammy award for best new artist, the fight will be between Jonas Brothers, R&B's Jazmine Sullivan, Lady Antebellum and British songbirds Adele and Duffy.
The announcement of the 51st Grammy nominations was a bit different this year. The nominations were made as a part of an hourlong live prime-time CBS concert special hosted by LL Cool J and Taylor Swift. Mariah Carey opened the gig on with Christmas (Baby Please Come Home).
