Wednesday night, when the Grammy nominations were announced in a new
format that featured an hour-long concert aired on CBS, Lil Wayne came
into no less than 8 nods, followed by Coldplay with 7 nominations.
Lil
Wayne has been nominated before for the Grammy awards, but he has never
won the trophy. Now, his top-selling album “Tha Carter III” scored a
much desired nomination for album of the year. Wayne will be competing
with Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida,” Radiohead’s “In Rainbows,” Ne-Yo’s
“Year of the Gentleman” and Robert Plant's collaboration with Alison
Krauss, called “Raising Sand.”
During the “GRAMMY Nominations
Concert Live -Countdown to Music's Biggest Night” event, Jay-Z, Ne-Yo
and Kanye West each received six nominations, followed closely by
Alison Krauss, John Mayer, Robert Plant, Radiohead and Jazmine Sullivan
with five nods.
Adele, Danger Mouse, Eagles, Lupe Fiasco, George Strait and T.I. earned four nominations each on Wednesday night.
Although
her song “I Kissed a Girl” is one of the biggest hits this year has
produced, Katy Perry did not get nominated for any of the top
categories such as best new artist or record of the year, the singer
having had to settle with a nod for female pop vocal performance.
Host
of the ceremony Taylor Swift was also absent from the nominees’ list,
even though last year she earned a nod for best new artist and her
recent album “Fearless,” which was released three weeks ago, has
registered impressive sales.
The Grammy Awards are scheduled to air on CBS on February 8.
