When actor and writer and now director Clark Gregg read "Choke" for the first time more than seven years ago, he felt he had to make it his directorial debut.
The Grammy-winning musician also Dave Matthews helped produce "Choke," the latest film made after a novel by Chuck Palahniuk (“Fight Club”). Matthews co-founded ATO Pictures which produced the film. "I felt very strongly about us being connected to the project. ... I loved the script," Matthews told The Associated Press during a phone interview Friday.
This is an adaptation made by director Clark Gregg who underlined the sex issues and social satire in Palahniuk’s book but all in all he didn’t quite succeed in making something too memorable.
The story revolves around Victor Mancini (Sam Rockwell) who isn’t feeling very satisfied of his sex-addict therapy group. It’s all about his finding moral redemption by falling as low as one can fall. In fact Victor Mancini is a pretty good guy who is trying to sort out his life and relationships. “Choke” is named after Victor's favorite cheat, which is to shovel food down his gullet on purpose until he chokes, allowing a well-meaning person to come to his rescue. His rescuers are very attentively chosen, though.
Anjelica Huston's character, Ida, is Victor’s mother. She now resides in a private nursing home and suffers from increasing senility. Her son takes care of her but can’t help not to have some extra fun with the hospital’s staff as he comes to visit. It is Victor’s loyalty towards his mother that gets us emotionally involved in the story.
But apart from the sex and lies, the film is a good attempt to start paying attention to one’s life and what one wants from it and what he has to do in order to achieve a goal.
