Lewis Hamilton has the chance to make history in Formula One
and it seems he doesn’t want to let anything at hazard. After recording the
fourth-fastest time in the free practice sessions yesterday, the Englishman
dominated the qualifying session to claim pole position for the Chinese Grand
Prix.
Before the qualifying session, the English driver was probably glad to find out
that the International Automobile Federation (FIA) won’t impose any sanctions
over the accident he caused in the Japanese Grand Prix. A video recorded by a
fan showed Hamilton
driving erratic behind the safety car and causing an accident between two cars
which were just behind him. The incident involved Mark Webber's Red Bull and
Sebastian Vettel's Toro Rosso and put both drivers out of the race.
Hamilton beat
Ferrari's Kimi Raikkonen to pole by one tenth of a second, while his main world
title rival Fernando Alonso will start the Chinese Grand Prix on fourth place.
This was the sixth pole of Hamilton’s
career.
"This weekend's been a bit of rollercoaster and quite an emotional trip. I
thought I was going to get a penalty for sure,” Hamilton said.
"Thankfully, with the team support, we pulled through it. It was not easy
to forget about something like that, not knowing if you would get your points
taken away."
If Hamilton gets the win in Shanghai he’ll clinch his first world title
with a race to spare, but he could also seal the title if he finishes before
his contender and teammate Fernando Alonso. Hamilton needs to earn two points more than
Alonso to put his total victory this year beyond any doubt.
The 22-year-old Englishman leads the drivers’ rankings with 107 points, 12 more
than his Spanish teammate, while Finland’s
Kimi Raikkonen, who dominated the free practice session on Friday, ranks third
with 90 points and Brazil’s
Felipe Massa on fourth with 80.
Alonso, whose relationship with McLaren’s headship has deteriorated over this
season, finished more than half-a-second behind and as he put it “only a
miracle” could prevent him from losing the crown to the English sensation.
