David Letterman, the host of the “Late Night Show,” really went at it and verbally assaulted John McCain, after the Republican presidential candidate canceled a scheduled appearance in the well-known talk show.
Actually, Letterman started the verbal assault on McCain the night before the scheduled show when he criticized the GOP’s decision to suspend his campaign for the moment so he could deal with the economic crisis the United States is facing. Letterman said that McCain’s move "didn't smell right."
Letterman became annoyed as McCain accepted to be interviewed by Katie Couric instead of him Wednesday, and even more irritated when he found out that McCain had been in the Big Apple until Thursday.
"That's what I feel like, I feel like an ugly date," Letterman said. "I feel used. I feel cheap. I feel sullied."
Trying to explain why McCain did not appear in Letterman’s show as planned, the senator’s spokeswoman Nicole Wallace said that it just “wasn't a night for comedy.”
"We deeply regret offending Mr. Letterman, but our candidate's priority at this moment is to focus on this crisis," she said during NBC's "Today" show.
John McCain dramatically made the announcement that he was suspending his campaign in order to go to Washington and help save the “exploding” US economy, as Letterman put it.
“When you call up and you call up at the last minute and you cancel a show, ladies and gentlemen, that’s starting to smell,” said the comedian, who was really irritated that he was left with lots of blank air time to fill.
