The five months that Apple is expected to spend without its cofounder and CEO will surely appear to be long and stressful for some. Steve Jobs announced a few days ago his temporary retirement due to some medical issues and explained that he took this decision in order to be able to focus on getting better but also to allow the company’s members to continue developing and releasing great products, without the constant worries about his condition.
"In order to take myself out of the limelight and focus on my health, and to allow everyone at Apple to focus on delivering extraordinary products, I have decided to take a medical leave of absence until the end of June," Jobs said in his statement.
One of the reasons Jobs took this decision to dissapear for such a long time is the fact that Apple’s departments are filled with very capable individuals, who will go all out to make sure that everything will be carried out just as before. The list begins with Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook, who will assume Jobs’ tasks over the next several months. Other executives such as marketing leader Phil Schiller, iPod software leader Scott Forstall and design genius Jonathan Ive will also get involved more in the process.
The company’s image is expected to suffer, as every single Apple product is directly linked to the company’s CEO. It is also a well known fact that he has managed, over the years, to get involved in all the aspects concerning the company, participating with ideas in concept discussions, design debates and marketing schemes. It is believed that it was his vision and competitive drive that took Apple to its current worldwide success. Still, with a full line of products on the market, most of them top sellers, and also other ones ready for release, the company should manage to get through these five months without considerable drama. Mr. Jobs should actually take all the needed time to get back to his healthy self, as the people appointed to deal with the everyday situations at Apple are more than qualified to complete them.
The complications surfaced last week, because until then,Steve Jobs announced that everything was under control and there was nothing to worry about. At the time, his doctors agreed that it was only a hormone imbalance that made him lose all that weight. He probably didn’t give it much though, as his full attention was set on Apple’s activity, but over the next several months he will be able to focus on what is really important. Even though I doubt he won’t check certain reports from time to time, or get bothered with different questions and issues, he is set on taking it easy and looking out for number one.
There is no need to hope for the best when it comes to Apple’s success, because the brand isn’t going anywhere. What should indeed be done, is to send a good thought in Jobs’ direction, for him to have a quick recovery.
