Less people are expected travel to be with their families this Thanksgiving despite the wide offer of holiday deals, especially on airplane tickets, and the lower pump prices. All airlines are struggling and their financial problems will likely worsen due to the decreasing consumer demand.

The number of people that will probably leave home on Thanksgiving will be about 600,000 lower than last year’s Thanksgiving when more than 41.5 million Americans took trips of more than 50 miles, the Automobile Association of America estimated. The slowdown comes despite the fact that gas prices dropped significantly.

"The economy is in such bad shape. ... They're still really hesitant to take that trip," said Beth Mosher, spokeswoman for AAA Chicago, according to The Associated Press news agency.

Airlines are also expecting fewer costumers compared to last year’s numbers. The airlines officials said they expect a 10 percent decrease in passengers this holiday season compared to last year’s. And remember, this slowdown comes in spite of lower ticket prices in a period when airlines used to increase them a bit. Even with the dropping ticket prices, the airlines expect to fly about 4.54 million people during the long holiday weekend compared to the 4.89 million who flied last year.

Compared to this year’s 4th of July, when the number of travelers dropped 2.3 percent due to higher gas prices, the decrease caused by the economy’s bad shape is far bigger.
