Digital Playground, one of the
most important adult film studios, announced recently that in January 2008 it
would release its first movie on the Blu-ray high def format, in a move that
will definitely heat up the popular format war. The title of this movie is
Pirates.
Digital Playground said that it
came to this decision because of its PlayStation 3 users, who have been demanding
films in Blu-ray format. However, the adult movie studio’s decision has a
special significance for the continuing format war between Blu-ray and HD DVD
because the company founder, “Joone”, violently rejected Blu-ray earlier this
year, charging the companies that have been backing this format and
particularly Sony with blocking porn industry’s effort to release movies in the
high def disc format.
But now, Joone announced that
Digital Playground would likely embrace rival Blu-ray too, as PS3 owners have
been demanding this for a long time.
“A lot of people were emailing that bought a PlayStation and they were
basically saying, ‘When are you guys going to release Blu-ray?’ They really
have no preference in format yet because it’s so now. When it comes down to
image quality, there is no difference between the two,” Joone said, without
practically betraying HD DVD.
So, although “It costs a lot more
to put out a title on Blu-ray," as Joone stated, Blu-ray will eventually
be Digital Playground’s movies’ second format.
